Schumacher begins GP2 test at wet Jerez

If ever a man was a stickler for preparation, it was Michael Schumacher. And as Schumachers Formula One comeback draws ever closer, the seven-time world champion is keen to show his younger rivals that hes training as hard as ever to be ready for his return to the grid with Mercedes.

So on Tuesday the German was back behind the wheel of a single-seater, privately testing a GP2 car at the Spanish circuit of Jerez. Although his running ended prematurely after heavy rain and strong winds hit the track, he covered 52 laps and was satisfied that the time in the car was helping him prepare for his first outing in Mercedes 2010 car, expected at the first official F1 test of the year next month.

“The day today was good especially because after a long time I could drive again in a car that came almost close to a current Formula One car,” said Schumacher. “Despite the weather not being what we all would have liked all my senses were nevertheless on full alert - this alone was worth it.

"I felt comfortable out on the track from the very beginning, and naturally I'd like to thank our team and the GP2 series very much for the opportunity to drive.”

As well as adjusting to life back in the cockpit, the 41 year-old is also evaluating several set-up solutions for the GP2 series, who are using the test to help with development of their next-generation car. Weather permitting, Schumacher will continue to test on Wednesday.
